I moved to Canterbury, in Sandwich, nine years ago. I was living in a large city north of Boston and I was fed up with the traffic, the noise, and the overall deteriorating conditions of the city. I wanted to live someplace pretty, where I could drive down the streets and enjoy charming houses, quaint shops, and of course, the magnificent ocean. A friend steered me to Sandwich where she said I could find all of those things, and she was right. I had a few surprises as well : there is a vibrant arts community, many ponds, easy access to all the Cape beaches, and everything a shopper could want in Hyannis.
However, my favorite thing about my move turned out to be my yard. I did not want an acre+ of land! That is, until I lived with it. I love sitting on my deck and listening to the world breathe. My backyard has been described as park-like, and it is! Lots of trees and lots of green, yet, I have tried to keep it as natural looking as possible: nothing manicured, no fertilizers ever, zone appropriate perennials, and a gravel driveway to keep the front of the house cooler in summer (good in the winter too for traction!).
I bought the house from a contractor who added many touches that otherwise would not make sense if only cost was the motivation. There are beautiful white oak floors throughout (even the walk-in closet), natural stone floors in the kitchen and bathroom, a built-in doggy door and den. The yard is fenced in and works for my medium sized pooch who loves having the space to run. Life off the leash!
Company can be comfortable in the two bedrooms and bath at one end of the house while at the other end is the main bedroom and en suite bath – very recently remodeled (like two months ago!). One level living has been a joy, and I will be sad to be leaving Canterbury and this home. The neighborhood is very safe and very walkable. You will meet lots of walkers on your daily wandering.
Yes, I am moving to Virginia. People always ask: “What’s in Virginia?” It’s a very simple answer: my grandchildren!
